A little over a month ago, we welcomed Gus into our family. If you follow me over on Instagram then you’ve seen a whole lot of this little guy since then, so I figured it was about time I wrote a little post to officially introduce him to all of you. Everyone, meet Gus!
A lot of people told me that I was completely nuts to even be considering adding a puppy into our already chaotic daily routine, but after going back and forth on it for quite awhile, Mike and I just felt the time was right. A few of you who have been around since the very beginning of this blog might remember our Basset Hound, Homer. Homer was our first baby, and he was a big part of our family when Max was little and Ella was first born. Sadly, he had some serious health problems and we lost him at a very young age. We knew that someday we would own a dog again, but as you can probably guess, the last several years have been filled with babies and a couple of big moves, and it just wasn’t in the cards. Several months ago the kids started asking for a dog. At first we didn’t really think anything of it, but then we started to talk about it and seriously consider the idea.
I have wanted a chocolate lab for a long time, and both Mike and I were particularly fond of the English style labs because of their stalky builds and calm personalities. If you aren’t familiar, English Labradors are the ones who are generally used as service dogs. It was super important to us to find a reputable breeder who bred labs with great bloodlines and offered a good health guarantee. After what we went through with Homer, we just couldn’t bear to go through something like that again. Our search led us to a wonderful family in the northern mountains of Pennsylvania who had a great reputation and beautiful dogs. The six of us piled into the minivan one Sunday morning and made the three hour drive to choose our newest family member from their litter of chocolate labs. From the moment we walked into their home, Gus was it! He climbed right into Ella’s lap and laid there. He was calm, sweet, and SO cute!
Yes, having a puppy has definitely added to the craziness around here, but we haven’t once regretted the decision to get him. Naturally, he does the things that almost all puppies do like chew on stuff, have accidents in the house, and chase the kids around, but he is learning, and he totally makes up for it with snuggles, and those big hazel eyes.
We love him so much, and I can’t wait to share more of him with all of you in the coming years!
