I think we can all agree, that when you’re a mom, you don’t get a whole lot of time to yourself. Occasionally I do find a spare moment here and there, and despite the fact that I should probably be using it to get some work done or to fold laundry, sometimes I just need a breather. A moment to zone out, if you will, and do something that I actually enjoy, before I’m called back to mom duty. Nursing sort of forces me to sit several times a day, and there isn’t much that I can do while I’m holding and feeding a baby, so I often find myself turning to my smartphone as a way to pass the time. I know a lot of you are in the same boat, so I thought I’d share some of my favorite apps and things that I do on my phone when I have a brief moment to myself!
1. Meal Planning
I don’t know about you guys, but I often get stuck in a rut when it comes to planning my family’s meals for the week. Lately I’ve been making it a point to hop on Pinterest and some of my favorite food blogs to find new recipes and dinner inspiration. I then use the notes app on my phone to make a list of the items that I need, and then when the time comes to make my grocery list, I check my notes and go from there! It’s so much less stressful than trying to come up with the whole week’s dinner menu in one sitting!
2. Podcasts
So I have to admit that I’m a little late to the game when it comes to podcasts, but once I started listening to them and found a few that I liked, I was hooked. There are so many good ones out there, and definitely something for everyone. Usually when I’m in the car, so are my kids, so I have to listen to stuff like “Wheels in the Bus”, but when it’s just me and Lilah and I’m trying to get her down for a nap, I’ll listen for few minutes to one of my favorite podcasts.
3. Games
I know what you’re thinking… games? Hear me out though. There are some really great game options out there available for smartphones, and many of them really help to sharpen your mind and keep it fresh. Pyramid Solitaire by MobilityWare is one of my favorite games to play when I have a free moment and I need a healthy dose of nostalgia. It brings me right back to my childhood when I used to sit on our family computer playing solitaire, except now I can play it right from my phone. What is Pyramid Solitaire exactly? It’s a fun card game where the goal is matching cards to equal 13 until you’ve been through the entire deck of cards. I like Pyramid in particular because the game is quick. It only takes 1-2 minutes to play, so it’s the perfect fast-paced game for when I’m on-the-go or I have a spare moment to myself. More and more often, I find myself playing it while I’m parked in the pick-up line at school or when I’m nursing Lilah, because it’s fun and even a little challenging at times!
4. Couponing
Confession… I am not great at budgeting and/or couponing, but I’m trying to be better about it. These days it’s so easy with all of the apps and websites out there that offer great deals. Grocery stores and places like target offer up deals on their apps, and it takes no time at all to scroll through, and save deals for the stuff you buy regularly or plan to purchase!
5. Reading Books and Magazines
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a total sucker for pretty magazine pages and hard copies of books, but I love that in this day and age there are apps available where you can download your favorite book titles and magazine subscriptions. For one, you’re saving on paper and having another item around your house, and secondly, whatever you are reading is always available at your fingertips as long as your phone is nearby!
