I have to admit, that up until recently, we’ve been pretty lucky in terms of diaper rashes. None of my kids have every really had a bad one… until now. I’m about 99% sure that we can chalk it up to teething, because Theo (who started teething late) has been cutting several teeth over the last few months, but when it first started, he got a really bad diaper rash. Naturally, I did what any clueless mom does, and took to the internet in search of answers, but per usual, I was totally overwhelmed by all of the results when it came to how to quickly cure a diaper rash. Although it can be helpful at times, going online can also make things really confusing too. I can’t stand seeing any of my babies suffering or in pain, so I knew I needed to try some things that would be effective, and fast. I used a combination of mother’s intuition paired with the tips I found online and some from friends who had been there, and thank goodness, my little guy’s bottom was healed in no time.
In an effort to help anyone else who might be in this position, and who would like a sure-fire way to heal a diaper rash quickly, I’m sharing my 5 tips for healing a diaper rash fast!
1. Change your baby’s diaper often…
One thing is for certain, it will not help your baby’s bottom if they’re sitting in a wet or poopie diaper. If your child has a rash, you want to keep them as dry as possible, which means changing them often and a lot more than you normally might.
2. Try using a damp cloth as a wipe…
When your baby has a diaper rash, the chemicals in baby wipes can be a little harsh, and possibly even burn an already sensitive area. It helps to use a warm damp washcloth whenever possible, and try to pat the area vs. wiping. Once done, using a fanning motion with your hands to help to dry the area before putting a fresh diaper back on.
3. Use an effective diaper ointment like Desitin Rapid Relief Cream…
Not only does Desitin Rapid Relief Cream help to cure a diaper rash super fast, but it also helps to prevent them! Applying Desitin forms a protective layer on your baby’s skin, and it’s the #1 choice of Pediatricians and Moms (which makes me feel good about using it). The formula is gentle enough to use every single diaper change, and it actually helps to relieve discomfort with just one application. Believe it or not, Desitin provides a 20% reduction in the redness caused by diaper rash in just three hours. This stuff was a Godsend for us when Theo was really suffering. I keep a tube on our changing table and my diaper bag, because since my babe is still teething, I’m not risking him having to go through that again.
4. Try a lukewarm bath…
Allowing your babe to soak in a lukewarm bath with some toys can help to distract them and also soothe their pain. Just be sure to check the water temperature before they go in. If it’s too hot, it will only add to that burning feeling they are already experiencing. Theo spent a lot of time in the tub when his rash was really bad. When drying your baby, be sure to (again) gently pat the area, rather than rubbing.
5. Let your baby hang out in the buff…
One of the easiest things you can do to help cure a diaper rash is to let your baby hang out around the house sans diaper. A little fresh air on that rashy bum can do a world of good. Just try to either keep your baby contained to a carpet-free room, or lay down some towels and be prepared for the occasional accident.
