‘Tis the season of indulgence, and when it comes holiday inspired treats, peppermint flavored anything rules my world.
When the holidays roll around, I always try to come up with some sort of festive treat to make and package up to gift to our neighbors, friends, and for a hostess gift to give at all of those holiday parties that we will be attending.
Sweet and Salty is a preferred flavor combination of mine, so this year, I wanted to find a way to pair that combo with the seasonal favorite, peppermint, to create the perfect holiday snack to give as gifts.
Another prerequisite for this treat… it had to be easy to make. These days, I don’t have a lot of free time to spend in the kitchen, so when it comes to recipes, I’m all about keeping it simple.
While perusing the holiday section at Target, I stumbled upon Chocolate Covered Wavy Lays, and the wheels began to turn. They are available for a limited time during the holiday season, and come in three great flavors, Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, and Milk Chocolate Covered with Almond Bits… all of which are delicious!
I instantly knew that the Chocolate Wavy Lays were the perfect combination of sweet & salty flavors that I was looking for, and that they would make for the an amazing vehicle to doctor up for a great holiday treat. That my friends, is when the idea for my sweet and salty peppermint bark was born!
This recipe couldn’t be easier to throw together, and doesn’t really require much “cooking” at all. I was able to find all of the necessary ingredients at Target, which was another bonus, seeing as I am there no less than three times a week!
Here’s what you’ll need to make a batch of sweet & salty peppermint bark of your own:
Sweet & Salty Peppermint Bark
Ingredients-
1 bag of Milk Chocolate covered Wavy Lays
1 bag of Dark Chocolate covered Wavy Lays
1 bag of white chocolate melting wafers or white chocolate chips
Peppermint crunch (crumbled peppermint candies)
Instructions-
- Spread your Chocolate Wavy Lays on a parchment-lined baking sheet, making sure to evenly distribute both the dark and milk chocolate flavors.
- Melt your white chocolate in a double boiler. (I melted mine in a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water, and stirred often. You could also melt it in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring each time until all of the white chocolate is melted)
- Using a spatula, drizzle white chocolate in a back and forth motion over the Wavy Lays.
- While white chocolate is still warm, generously sprinkle peppermint crunch over the chips (try to get a bit of the peppermint on each chip!).
To give this treat as a gift, if you can restrain yourself from eating all of it, I like to package it up in a pretty and festive way.
I located all of the items for the simple packaging that you see here at Target as well. The cardboard “take out” containers were found in the holiday section, right near where I found the Chocolate Wavy Lays. Then I found some pretty ribbon and festive tissue paper in the gift wrapping area nearby, along with the “chalkboard” gift tags.
All of these items cam easily be found at your local craft store as well.
After the “bark” cooled, I lined each box with a piece of tissue paper, and then generously filled them with the peppermint bark that I created using the Chocolate Wavy Lays.
I then closed the container, and wrapped the pretty ribbon around the outside and tied it in a bow. Using a chalkboard marker, I added a festive message to the stick-on gift tag, and placed it on top of the box. For a fun touch, I added a little clipping of pine that we had leftover from trimming our tree, and wallah… I had a super simple, incredibly tasty gift to handout throughout the holiday season!
What is your favorite holiday treat to indulge in?
