If you love donuts, raise your hand! Seriously though, if you don’t, I’m not sure that we can be friends (kidding of course!). My kids are little donut fiends, and as much as I love popping through the drive thru and nabbing them one (or a dozen) while I get my iced coffee, they are super easy to make at home… and as an added bonus, they’re really fun to decorate and personalize to your own taste.
Though we have tried our fair share of donut recipes over the last few years, this one always ends up being our go-to, because it’s really simple to throw together, you can experiment with different flavors, and it doesn’t require a ton of ingredients. My four year old even helped make this batch!
First things first, grab yourself a donut pan. This is the one that we use, but there are lots of options out there. Other than that, you’ll just need some gallon sized Ziplock bags… or a piping bag, if you’re fancy like that!
- FOR DONUTS
- 1 box of cake mix (we used vanilla, but feel free to use any flavor you like)
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
- 1 cup of water
- FOR ICING
- 1 cup of confectioners sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 Tbs milk
- ***Optional, sprinkles to decorate
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray donut pan with cooking spray. In a mixing bowl, combine cake mix, egg, oil, and water, and stir until combined. Pour mixture into a large ziplock bag (or piping bag), and snip one corner of the bag. Pipe batter into donut pan (keep in mind that they will rise, so be careful not to overfill). Bake in oven for 14 minutes. While donuts bake, combine the ingredients for the icing in a small bowl. Remove donuts from oven, and allow them to cool before removing them from the pan and icing. To ice, place one side of the donut down in the icing. Remove and add sprinkles while wet. Allow icing to harden before eating.
